This picture is bathed in dusk’s cold light. At a lower level, its dimness is charged with street lighting and traffic headlamps which are, in places, distended by reflections in water. To the left, the yellow sodium lights of the bus indicate that it has stopped to pick up passengers. Higher up, the floodlit Cathedral glows in the melancholy-looking sky. For all its serenity this scene is reminiscent of the famous photos of the Cathedral taken during the Blitz with their dramatic depictions of smoke and searchlights.
