Although January is the start of the year, it is often a month that people want to get through quickly, most likely because it represents a lean time after the festive period. Indeed, when I was painting this particular January scene the Christmas decorations had vanished and there was a large pile of used pine trees behind where I was painting.
Still, it is the lean periods which make for a great creative start and without distraction. This painting represents a sort of statement of intent for the kinds of places and things that I want to paint: A sense of place created by strong light and crisp shadows, unassuming row of shops, the metal of parked vehicles or the soft glow of snug residential windows.
