There is something consolidating in working with a familiar scene. I have painted this viewpoint of London's iconic cathedral at least once before.
The sense of adventure, however, came in capturing the picture in the pouring rain at night. One of my practical New Year’s Resolutions was to experiment with a specially attached umbrella on the easel to shield a canvas from the rain. And it did the trick…. but I had not reckoned on the strong wind and, as a result, when my back was turned, the entire thing - umbrella, easel, canvas, lamp - took flight and scuttled down the road, with me scuttling after it!
